Succinic acid semialdehyde, also known as 4-oxobutanoate or 3-formylpropanoic acid, is a member of the class of compounds known as straight chain fatty acids. Straight chain fatty acids are fatty acids with a straight aliphatic chain. Thus, succinic acid semialdehyde is considered to be a fatty aldehyde lipid molecule. Succinic acid semialdehyde is soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Succinic acid semialdehyde can be found in a number of food items such as ginseng, wakame, sourdock, and pak choy, which makes succinic acid semialdehyde a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Succinic acid semialdehyde can be found primarily in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and urine, as well as in human testes tissue. Succinic acid semialdehyde exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, succinic acid semialdehyde is involved in a couple of metabolic pathways, which include glutamate metabolism and homocarnosinosis. Succinic acid semialdehyde is also involved in few metabolic disorders, which include 2-hydroxyglutric aciduria (D and L form), 4-hydroxybutyric aciduria/succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency, hyperinsulinism-hyperammonemia syndrome, and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency. Succinic semialdehyde (SSA) is a GABA metabolite. It is formed from GABA by the action of GABA transaminase and further oxidised to become succinic acid, which enters TCA cycle .
