Definition
5-methylthioribose is a member of the class of compounds known as pentoses. Pentoses are monosaccharides in which the carbohydrate moiety contains five carbon atoms. 5-methylthioribose is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). 5-methylthioribose can be found in a number of food items such as canola, black-eyed pea, abalone, and spearmint, which makes 5-methylthioribose a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. 5-methylthioribose exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans.
