Meso-diaminopimelate, also known as diaminopimelic acid or dpm, is a member of the class of compounds known as alpha amino acids. Alpha amino acids are amino acids in which the amino group is attached to the carbon atom immediately adjacent to the carboxylate group (alpha carbon). Meso-diaminopimelate is soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Meso-diaminopimelate can be found in a number of food items such as italian sweet red pepper, sweet basil, horseradish, and hickory nut, which makes meso-diaminopimelate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Meso-diaminopimelate is a characteristic of certain cell walls of some bacteria. Meso-diaminopimelate is often found in the peptide linkages of NAM-NAG chains that make up the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria. When provided, they exhibit normal growth. When in deficiency, they still grow but with the inability to make new cell wall proteoglycan .
