Gamma-glutamylcysteine, also known as gamma-glu-cys or glu(-cys), is a member of the class of compounds known as N-acyl-alpha amino acids. N-acyl-alpha amino acids are compounds containing an alpha amino acid which bears an acyl group at its terminal nitrogen atom. Gamma-glutamylcysteine is slightly soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Gamma-glutamylcysteine can be found in a number of food items such as napa cabbage, cupuaçu, irish moss, and persimmon, which makes gamma-glutamylcysteine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Gamma-glutamylcysteine can be found primarily in blood, feces, and urine, as well as in human fibroblasts, neuron and prostate tissues. Gamma-glutamylcysteine exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, gamma-glutamylcysteine is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include glutamate metabolism, cystinosis, ocular nonnephropathic, glutathione metabolism, and cysteine metabolism. Gamma-glutamylcysteine is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include gamma-glutamyltransferase deficiency, 4-hydroxybutyric aciduria/succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency, succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency, and glutathione synthetase deficiency. Moreover, gamma-glutamylcysteine is found to be associated with schizophrenia.
