Dimethylallylpyrophosphate, also known as 2-isopentenyl diphosphate or delta-prenyl diphosphate, is a member of the class of compounds known as isoprenoid phosphates. Isoprenoid phosphates are prenol lipids containing a phosphate group linked to an isoprene (2-methylbuta-1,3-diene) unit. Thus, dimethylallylpyrophosphate is considered to be an isoprenoid lipid molecule. Dimethylallylpyrophosphate is slightly soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Dimethylallylpyrophosphate can be found in a number of food items such as potato, mammee apple, ginseng, and radish, which makes dimethylallylpyrophosphate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Dimethylallylpyrophosphate can be found primarily in human muscle tissue. Dimethylallylpyrophosphate exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, dimethylallylpyrophosphate is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include steroid biosynthesis, zoledronate action pathway, alendronate action pathway, and pamidronate action pathway. Dimethylallylpyrophosphate is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include hyper-igd syndrome, smith-lemli-opitz syndrome (SLOS), CHILD syndrome, and lysosomal acid lipase deficiency (wolman disease). Dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (DMAPP; or alternatively, dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMADP); also isoprenyl pyrophosphate) is an isoprenoid precursor. It is a product of both the mevalonate pathway and the MEP pathway of isoprenoid precursor biosynthesis. It is an isomer of isopentenyl pyrophosphate (IPP) and exists in virtually all life forms. The enzyme isopentenyl pyrophosphate isomerase catalyzes isomerization between DMAPP and IPP .
