Carbamoylphosphate, also known as carbamyl phosphoric acid or carbamoyl-P, belongs to organic phosphoric acids and derivatives class of compounds. Those are organic compounds containing phosphoric acid or a derivative thereof. Carbamoylphosphate is soluble (in water) and a moderately acidic compound (based on its pKa). Carbamoylphosphate can be found in a number of food items such as elliott's blueberry, pepper (c. pubescens), sunburst squash (pattypan squash), and watermelon, which makes carbamoylphosphate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Carbamoylphosphate can be found primarily in saliva, as well as in human spleen tissue. Carbamoylphosphate exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, carbamoylphosphate is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include pyrimidine metabolism, homocarnosinosis, urea cycle, and arginine and proline metabolism. Carbamoylphosphate is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include hyperinsulinism-hyperammonemia syndrome, canavan disease, 2-hydroxyglutric aciduria (D and L form), and argininosuccinic aciduria.
