Hydrogen carbonate, also known as bicarbonate or hco3(-), is a member of the class of compounds known as organic carbonic acids. Organic carbonic acids are compounds comprising the carbonic acid functional group. Hydrogen carbonate is soluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Hydrogen carbonate can be found in a number of food items such as moth bean, buffalo currant, lemon balm, and napa cabbage, which makes hydrogen carbonate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Hydrogen carbonate can be found primarily in blood, cellular cytoplasm, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Hydrogen carbonate exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. In humans, hydrogen carbonate is involved in several metabolic pathways, some of which include citric acid cycle, betazole action pathway, lysinuric protein intolerance, and omeprazole action pathway. Hydrogen carbonate is also involved in several metabolic disorders, some of which include metiamide action pathway, transfer of acetyl groups into mitochondria, MNGIE (mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy), and leigh syndrome. Moreover, hydrogen carbonate is found to be associated with hawkinsinuria. The term "bicarbonate" was coined in 1814 by the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston. The prefix "bi" in "bicarbonate" comes from an outdated naming system and is based on the observation that there is twice as much carbonate (CO2− 3) per sodium ion in sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and other bicarbonates than in sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and other carbonates. The name lives on as a trivial name .
