Benzyl benzoate, also known as benylate or benzoic acid phenylmethylester, is a member of the class of compounds known as benzoic acid esters. Benzoic acid esters are ester derivatives of benzoic acid. Benzyl benzoate is practically insoluble (in water) and an extremely weak basic (essentially neutral) compound (based on its pKa). Benzyl benzoate is a faint, sweet, and almond tasting compound and can be found in a number of food items such as almond, nance, european cranberry, and broad bean, which makes benzyl benzoate a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Benzyl benzoate can be found primarily in blood and urine. Benzyl benzoate is a drug which is used to kill lice and the mites responsible for the skin condition scabies. Benzyl benzoate was first studied medically in 1918. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, the most effective and safe medicines needed in a health system. Benzyl benzoate is available as a generic medication. The wholesale cost in the developing world is about 0.21 to 0.53 USD per 100 mls. It is not available for medical use in the United States.
