3-phenylpropionic acid, also known as dihydrocinnamic acid or phenylpropanoate, is a member of the class of compounds known as phenylpropanoic acids. Phenylpropanoic acids are compounds with a structure containing a benzene ring conjugated to a propanoic acid. 3-phenylpropionic acid is slightly soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). 3-phenylpropionic acid can be synthesized from propionic acid. 3-phenylpropionic acid is also a parent compound for other transformation products, including but not limited to, 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, 3-phenylpropionate ester, and 3-hydroxy-3-phenylpropionic acid. 3-phenylpropionic acid is a sweet, balsamic, and cinnamon tasting compound and can be found in a number of food items such as cocoa bean, red algae, abiyuch, and rosemary, which makes 3-phenylpropionic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. 3-phenylpropionic acid can be found primarily in blood, feces, saliva, and urine, as well as in human kidney and liver tissues. 3-phenylpropionic acid exists in all living organisms, ranging from bacteria to humans. Moreover, 3-phenylpropionic acid is found to be associated with prostate cancer. Phenylpropanoic acid or hydrocinnamic acid is a carboxylic acid with the formula C9H10O2 belonging to the class of phenylpropanoids. It is a white, crystalline solid with a sweet, floral scent at room temperature. Phenylpropanoic acid has a wide variety of uses including cosmetics, food additives, and pharmaceuticals .
