Definition
Allantoic acid, also known as diureidoacetic acid or allantoate, is a member of the class of compounds known as N-carbamoyl-alpha amino acids. N-carbamoyl-alpha amino acids are compounds containing an alpha amino acid which bears an carbamoyl group at its terminal nitrogen atom. Allantoic acid is slightly soluble (in water) and a weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). Allantoic acid can be found in a number of food items such as tea leaf willow, poppy, hard wheat, and alaska blueberry, which makes allantoic acid a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products. Allantoic acid exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Allantoic acid is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H8N4O4. It is a crystalline acid obtained by hydrolysis of allantoin .
Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as n-carbamoyl-alpha amino acids. N-carbamoyl-alpha amino acids are compounds containing an alpha amino acid which bears an carbamoyl group at its terminal nitrogen atom.
