Benzylisoquinolines are organic compounds containing an isoquinoline to which a benzyl group is attached (s)-n-methylcoclaurine is practically insoluble (in water) and a very weakly acidic compound (based on its pKa). (s)-n-methylcoclaurine can be found in a number of food items such as macadamia nut (m. tetraphylla), oxheart cabbage, barley, and tartary buckwheat, which makes (s)-n-methylcoclaurine a potential biomarker for the consumption of these food products.
