Definition
S-Hydroxymethylglutathione is a critical component of the binding site for activating fatty acids in glutathione-dependent formaldehyde dehydrogenase activity (OMIM: 103710 ). Formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FDH; EC 1.2.1.1), a widely occurring enzyme, catalyzes the oxidation of S-hydroxymethylglutathione into S-formylglutathione in the presence of NAD (PMID: 2806555 ).
Belongs to the class of organic compounds known as oligopeptides. These are organic compounds containing a sequence of between three and ten alpha-amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
